Broken and Screwed (The BS Series Book 1) (English Edition) Reviews
Fünf Sterne, weil Tijan einfach toll schreibt. Trotzdem, sehr gut.
You either like Tijan-Stories or you don't. Is the second series of Tijan I read so far. I like her way of writing, and yes it is a little depressing sometimes. So far in the end everything ended somehow happy but always with some drawbacks and not necessarily in the first part. Tijan characters are troubled souls and have a lot of baggage. That's part of the charme, that's what makes the story not completly predictable. So no. It's not a romantic comedy and nothing for people who want nice characters without flaws and 100 % happy end.
I have a few criteria for a five-star- rating. An amazing book transports the character's feelings to the reader and let him feel the emotions for them. I have to connect with the story and their characters, tear up, cry, smile and laugh; can't put the book away, spend the whole night with reading and want to start all over again with the book / books. I know it is totally subjective.I read a few of Tijan's books in the past and will read more from her. After four books I can say I'm really impressed with Tijan's work. I really like „Carter Reed“, adore the „Fallen Crest“ series and „Broken and Screwed“ doesn't disappoint me as well. She became one of my favorite authors. She complies with all of my criteria for a five-star-rating.„Broken and Screwed“ is the love story of Alex and Jesse. Alex – the first-person narrator – is the sister of Jesse's best friend Ethan who died a year ago in a car accident. Both overwhelmed by their grief, have casual sex on Ethan's funeral, birthday and anniversary. While Alex knows that she is in love with Jesse, Jesse always leaves after the sex, doesn't want a regular relationship with her, ignores her most of the time in school and hooks up with other girls. His behavior reduces Alex to sex and she feels exploited and ashamed because he just has to call. She can't change the fact that she needs him and is always available for him. Anyway, their bond is highly visible and even Jesse can't live without his best friend's sister who is family for him.Tijan's stories are different from all the other books I read in the last few months. In other books where a loved family member or friend dies, it is mostly a new student at school who falls in love with the protagonist and helps to overcome the grief. That's not the case in „Broken and Screwed“ and I'm glad it isn’t because it is unique. I longed for a similar story with another concept. The story's time frame is longer. While other stories take place in a few weeks or months, „Broken and Screwed“ tells about Alex' last year in school. Tijan give the characters enough time to evolve. She doesn't write the typical Hollywood love stories where the protagonist meets the love of his/her life, spends time with his/her, falls in love with his/her and lives happily ever after with his/her till death do them apart. She combines love, sex and relationships with serious issues, concentrates on the psychological aspects of human behavior and portrays main and minor characters very honest. All different kinds of human and human behavior patterns are shown in her books and nothing is perfect. Alex and Jesse don't cope very well with Ethan's death. Alex makes heartbreaking mistakes and Jesse is too self-concentrated. Her parents are unbelievable selfish and her friends are overstrained with the whole situation. I love the reality. Tijan doesn't embellish the situation.Tijan's characters don't have it the easy way. They have to fight for their happy endings. Their struggle is written in a very detailed and vivid way. I love Tijan's capability to transport her character's feelings and her storyline's combinations. They get me all the time.
